King James Bible Turns 400!
The King James version of the Bible (KJV) was published 400 years ago this year! I don't usually read this version when studying the Bible, although I have to admit that the beautiful prose of the KJV cannot be compared to any of the newer translations of the original Hebrew text. I believe the main reason that most people and churches today don't consistently read this version is that the masses are not very comfortable with the semantics and syntax of the "King's English". Let face it, it takes a little bit more effort to read the KJV than the New International Version (NIV) or the New American Standard Bible (NASB).
When I was younger, I found myself discouraged when trying to read the KJV of the bible because it was so difficult for a young person to understand. Therefore, I didn't read the bible as often as I should. I was in college when I discovered the NASB and the NIV. They were so easy to read and understand. I felt as if I was cheating in some way when I initially read through the NIV, but began to realize that the translation allowed me to be more consistent with my bible study.
Today, I advise that all young people purchase an NIV or NASB if they are beginning serious bible study. Another adequate translation of the bible is the New English Translation (NET) Bible which can be read in book, pdf, online and as an app on your iPhone. I love studying the bible in an electronic format which makes it very easy to take notes as you read. I encourage everyone to go out and read the bible in any form that is convenient. It is not about the version or format. It's about understanding and using the Word of God as your armor and shield on a daily basis. Have fun!
